Counselling and Psychotherapy: Revisioning Pastoral Counselling and Spiritual Direction

Keynote Speaker

BRO. COLLIN WEE, FSC.
Family Therapist

Training programmes in pastoral care and psychotherapy tend to be quite different from training programmes in spiritual direction. Their provision of care is different: psychotherapy is associated with a pathology/crisis intervention model while spiritual direction is associated with a wellness/growth model. While psychotherapy tends to focus directly on the individual’s personal crisis, relationship with a spouse, family members or a peer, spiritual direction focuses more directly on the individual’s encounter with God.In his keynote address, Brother Collin Wee will share his thoughts on the revisioning process and how social systems must adapt. If the social system is unable to adapt, it may be necessary for an outside agency to help with the process. In this aspect, he will describe the process of change or no change through observation and therapeutic intervention.Rooting the self in spiritual direction, he will touch on a theory of self-transcendence as a foundational basis. He will elaborate on the self-transcendence consistency as the radical desire of the self for both autonomy and growth - the dual autonomy to be a transcended self and to reach out beyond the self to the world, others and God through the internalized values.

Transcending Physical & Mental Decline in Seniors with Christian Spirituality (Extended talk)

Dr Philip Yap

The conventional narrative of successful ageing is premised on appraising seniors on midlife standards of autonomy, wealth and good health, reinforcing the notion of measuring seniors’ worth by their attributes, possessions and instrumental value. However, ageing can bring about a decline in physical, cognitive and emotional health. Adapting to these changes can prove challenging and may result in mental and emotional distress and disenchantment. How then can seniors age well in the face of loss and decline? This session will provide an understanding of how physical and mental frailty can accompany ageing and what helps to maintain a good quality of life. It proposes that the Christian perspective to ageing, suffering and ultimately mortality can help engender wisdom and give ailing seniors fresh hope and a reason to live.

Dr Philip Yap, a specialist in geriatric medicine and palliative medicine, brings his wealth of experience to this enlightening discussion. He currently works as a Senior Consultant in the Department of Geriatric Medicine at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. He also holds adjunct positions as an Associate Professor at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS, as well as at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, NTU. He volunteers with Dementia Singapore (DSG) and is a member of the DSG Board. His dedication to seniors' well-being is a testament to his passion for compassionate care.
